Eight Labourers Killed in Highway Collision Near Gwalior

All eight victims were residents of Lakhimpur Kheri in Uttar Pradesh who had travelled to the Gwalior area to work in paddy fields.
The Collision
According to officer Ram Mahesh Yadav, the crash took place on National Highway 79 sometime between midnight and 1:00 a.m. A loading truck carrying workers struck another truck travelling in the opposite direction, sending the loaded vehicle overturning onto the road. Police officers and bystanders pulled the wounded from the wreckage in the minutes following the impact.
Approximately 22 people sustained injuries in the crash. Every injured individual was transported to the trauma centre at Jai Arogya Hospital in Gwalior, where they remained under medical care.
Who Were the Victims
The passengers aboard the loading truck were agricultural labourers hailing from Pachgawan, Lakhimpur Kheri, and neighbouring villages across Uttar Pradesh. They had been employed at a rice plantation and were heading home when the collision occurred.
Probable Cause
Preliminary police investigation pointed to a herd of cattle wandering across the highway as the likely trigger for the accident. The driver of the loading truck apparently attempted to swerve around the animals, losing control and colliding with the oncoming vehicle.
