Meerut police detain man and woman after alleged car-bonnet incident
Indiadailyupdate.com – Meerut – A late-night confrontation on Hapur Road in Meerut ended with police detaining a man and a woman after his wife allegedly climbed onto the bonnet of their car in an attempt to stop it. The woman claimed her husband then drove the vehicle for roughly 100 metres while she remained on the bonnet, prompting passers-by to intervene.
The episode unfolded on Saturday evening near the L-Block police outpost, which falls within the Lohiyanagar police station area. Footage that later circulated on social media showed the woman lying across the front of the car and calling for help as the vehicle moved.
Confrontation near police outpost
Police identified the man as Mayank, a resident of Hasanpur Kala in Kithore. He was travelling in the car with another woman when his wife spotted the vehicle near the outpost, officials said.
His wife allegedly rushed toward the car after seeing them. Mayank drove away, she claimed, and she then climbed onto the bonnet in an effort to prevent him from leaving. The car continued for a short distance before people nearby noticed the situation, raised an alarm and attempted to stop it.
Once the vehicle came to a halt, the wife allegedly attacked Mayank and tore his clothes. The woman who had been travelling with him left the scene, police said. Officers arrived soon afterward and brought those involved to the police station.
The wife filed a complaint accusing her husband of attempting to kill her. Police subsequently detained Mayank and the other woman, while the car allegedly used during the incident was seized for the investigation.
Case registered under BNS provisions
Deputy superintendent of police Sangram Singh said authorities had registered a case after examining the complaint and the incident.
“A case has been registered after taking cognisance of the incident under BNS sections 109(1) and 352. The husband and his alleged girlfriend have been detained. The car used in the incident has also been seized. Further legal action is being taken,” he said.
The allegation that Mayank tried to run over his wife forms the central focus of the police case. Investigators will assess the complaint, the videos circulating online, witness accounts and other available material as they proceed with legal action.
The incident drew attention partly because it occurred on a busy road and close to a police outpost. The intervention of members of the public appears to have brought the car to a stop, preventing the confrontation from continuing on the road.
Couple had been living separately
Mayank and his wife married in 2014 and have two sons. Police said the couple had been living apart for nearly three years following marital differences.
Mayank previously operated a shop in Central Market, where he reportedly came into contact with the woman who was with him in the car. She works for an insurance company and had divorced her husband about six years ago. Police said she also has a child.
The matter has placed a long-running domestic dispute into public view, but the allegations remain subject to the ongoing legal process. The detentions and seizure of the vehicle are part of the immediate police response, while investigators continue to determine the sequence of events and the roles of everyone involved.
Second video emerges
Another video involving the couple has also surfaced. It allegedly shows Mayank at a petrol pump with the woman inside his car. As the car was leaving, his wife allegedly arrived on a scooter with another man, stopped the vehicle and confronted both occupants.
The emergence of more than one video may give investigators additional material to review, though the clips alone do not settle the allegations. Their timing, location and full context will be relevant as police continue their inquiry.
The case highlights how personal disputes can rapidly become dangerous when they spill into traffic. In this instance, the alleged decision to drive while a person was on the bonnet created an immediate risk not only for those directly involved but also for pedestrians and other road users nearby.
Police have said further action is under way. The complaint, witness accounts, seized car and available recordings are expected to remain important elements of the investigation into the Meerut confrontation.
