Mother and Young Son Die After Tanker Strikes Family’s Two-Wheeler in Virar

Indiadailyupdate.com – A family’s visit to the Jeevdani temple ended in tragedy on Monday after a water tanker hit their two-wheeler near Kopri Naka in Virar West. Kavita Pal, 28, and her four-year-old son Aariv died in the crash, while her husband Dharmendra Pal and their seven-year-old son Ayansh were injured.

The family lived in the Jeevan Nagar locality of Nalasopara East. Dharmendra, 30, Kavita, Aariv and Ayansh had left home during the morning to travel to the temple in Virar West. All four were riding on the same two-wheeler when the collision occurred at about 9am.

Collision Near Kopri Naka

Police said the family was close to Kopri Naka when a speeding water tanker struck their vehicle from behind. The impact threw all four riders onto the road.

Kavita was holding Aariv when the crash occurred. Both suffered fatal injuries at the scene. People nearby rushed to help and took the woman and child to a hospital, where they were declared dead on arrival.

“Their four-year-old son was in Kavita Pal’s arms, and the tanker ran over their heads, causing them to die instantly,” a police officer said.

Dharmendra and Ayansh were injured in the incident. The report did not specify the extent of their injuries or the hospital where they were being treated.

Driver Arrested

Virar police reached the location after receiving information about the accident. The tanker driver, identified as Shamsher Zuber Ali, was arrested in connection with the deaths.

Senior police inspector Lalu Ture said Ali has been booked under Section 106(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, the provision dealing with causing death through negligence.

The case will examine the circumstances that led to the tanker hitting the two-wheeler. A collision from behind can leave riders especially vulnerable, as they have little protection from the force of a heavy vehicle and can be thrown directly into surrounding traffic.

Fresh Concern Over Heavy-Vehicle Safety

The fatal crash has renewed concern over the movement of fast-moving heavy vehicles in the Virar area, particularly water tankers. Such vehicles occupy more road space, require longer distances to stop and can pose severe risks to people using two-wheelers, walking along roadsides or crossing busy junctions.

The incident follows another tanker-related crash in Virar only two days earlier. On Saturday, a 60-year-old man was killed after a tanker hit the two-wheeler on which he was travelling with his wife. His wife was seriously injured in that crash.

The two incidents have drawn attention to the consequences of speeding around local roads used by commuters, families and visitors travelling to religious sites. For two-wheeler riders, even a brief loss of control or a failure by another vehicle to maintain distance can have devastating consequences.

Road users approaching junctions and congested stretches often face a mix of cars, two-wheelers, pedestrians and commercial vehicles. Heavy tankers need additional care in these conditions because their weight and size can make sudden braking or evasive movement difficult. Drivers following smaller vehicles also have a responsibility to leave sufficient space and reduce speed where traffic conditions demand it.

For the Pal family, a routine morning journey became a catastrophic loss. Kavita and Aariv’s deaths leave Dharmendra and Ayansh injured as police continue action against the driver involved in the crash.

The accident also underscores the importance of enforcement against dangerous driving and greater caution by operators of heavy vehicles on roads shared with vulnerable users. While investigations determine responsibility in individual cases, repeated crashes involving tankers highlight the need for safer speeds, alert driving and careful road use throughout the area.
