Haryana man, 24, arrested for deepfake CCTV image of cop harassing journalist during CJP project
Palwal Resident Held Over Alleged AI-Made Images Linked to Delhi Protest
Indiadailyupdate.com – Delhi Police have arrested a 24-year-old man from Haryana’s Palwal district over allegations that he created and shared artificial intelligence-generated reels and posters portraying police personnel sexually harassing a woman journalist during a protest in central Delhi.
The material was circulated online in the aftermath of a demonstration near Jantar Mantar organised by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) against the Election Commission of India (ECI). Investigators say the images were fabricated but were presented on social-media platforms as authentic CCTV visuals from the protest location.
The accused, identified as Nadeem Ahmad, was arrested on October 5. Police say preliminary questioning suggested that the disputed content was produced on October 3 and distributed a day later.
Posts portrayed as protest-site CCTV footage
Officials said their social-media monitoring cell identified reels and posters on Instagram and Facebook that used AI-generated imagery while claiming to show real events from the protest. One poster depicted a police officer appearing to grope a woman, styled as though it were a still taken from a CCTV recording.
The posts included AI-generated depictions of assistant commissioner of police Vivek Bhagat. A woman had accused Bhagat of sexual harassment during Saturday’s CJP protest, making the circulation of manipulated visuals particularly sensitive in the context of the public allegations.
The case highlights the difficulty of assessing highly realistic digital content during fast-moving public events. Images designed to resemble surveillance footage can appear credible to viewers who see them outside their original context, especially when they are shared rapidly across several platforms.
Instagram channel examined in investigation
Additional deputy commissioner of police for New Delhi district Manjeet Sheoran said Ahmad started an Instagram channel named “news_aaina0776” in April or May this year, ahead of the CJP protests at Jantar Mantar. The account had more than 24,000 followers at the time police detailed the case.
Ahmad is a Class 10 dropout, police said. Investigators are examining the online activity linked to the account and the distribution of the material across social-media services.
“Ahmad’s interrogation revealed that his motive behind creating and circulating the fabricated and objectionable images of a police officer was to tarnish the image of the Delhi Police, create unrest and incite the protesters to attack the police,” Sheoran said.
Police have described the matter as an investigation into allegedly fabricated and objectionable content. The allegations have not been established through a court verdict, and the inquiry remains under way.
Police probe funding, associates and possible planning
Investigators are questioning Ahmad to determine whether there was any financial support behind the content, whether others were involved in its preparation or circulation, and whether the posts formed part of a planned effort to provoke violence during or after the protest.
Police are also considering the possibility that the material was intended to instigate protesters and contribute to rioting. Establishing how the images were created, who had access to them before publication, and how widely they travelled online will be central to the next phase of the inquiry.
The case underscores the growing role of AI-generated media in public-order investigations. Artificial intelligence tools can create images, video and audio that mimic documentary material, including the visual style of surveillance cameras, news clips and eyewitness recordings. Such material may be difficult for ordinary users to identify as synthetic when labels, context or verification are absent.
For readers encountering dramatic content tied to protests or allegations of misconduct, several details can be useful warning signs: an unclear original upload, a lack of verifiable location details, unusual visual distortions, or claims that rely on screenshots instead of accessible footage. These signs do not by themselves prove that an image is false, but they can justify caution before sharing it further.
In incidents involving alleged misconduct by public officials, manipulated content can complicate legitimate scrutiny as well as intensify tensions. Genuine complaints and evidence require careful examination, while digitally created material presented as authentic footage can affect public perception before its origin is established.
Protest context in central Delhi
The allegations concern content connected to the CJP protest near Jantar Mantar in central Delhi. Demonstrations in the area often attract large numbers of participants, police deployment and substantial online attention. Footage and photographs from such events can circulate within minutes, leaving little time for audiences to verify whether an image is original, edited or entirely generated.
Delhi Police’s social-media monitoring cell flagged the posts at issue after they were circulated as purported CCTV images. The police inquiry will seek to identify the chain of creation and dissemination, including any accounts or individuals who may have helped amplify the material.
Ahmad’s arrest marks an early step in that process. Further questioning is expected to focus on the alleged source of funding, potential associates and whether investigators find evidence of advance coordination. Any conclusions about a wider conspiracy will depend on evidence collected during the ongoing investigation.
