Kanpur man objects to youths urinating on road, bludgeoned to death
Shopkeeper Dies After Alleged Assault Near Kanpur Crossing
Indiadailyupdate.com – A 47-year-old shopkeeper died after he was allegedly attacked by a group of youths near Om Crossing in Kanpur’s Kakadeo area late on Saturday night. The confrontation reportedly began when he objected to one of the men urinating in the middle of the road.
The victim, Amit Kumar of Naveen Nagar, operated a shop called Prem Aid in Kakadeo. He was heading home after closing the business when he encountered the group at about 11 pm. CCTV footage reviewed by police reportedly shows four or five people assaulting him, including repeated blows to his head with a brick.
Dispute Escalated Into Violence
Amit’s family said several youths had gathered near the crossing after drinking alcohol. When one youth began urinating on the road, Amit protested. An argument followed before the group allegedly surrounded him.
Rudra Pratap Singh, Amit’s son, told police that the youth responded to his father’s objection with abuse. The other men with him allegedly joined the attack soon afterward. The family has also alleged that people who attempted to step in were assaulted by the group.
The alleged attackers left the location after the assault and are said to have threatened people in the neighbourhood. Residents contacted police through the 112 emergency number and also informed Amit’s relatives.
Two Days of Treatment
Amit suffered grave injuries to his head during the attack. He was first taken to a private hospital nearby and was subsequently referred to Anurag Hospital for further treatment. He remained there for two days before dying on Monday night.
The case has prompted concern among local residents and Amit’s family, who have demanded firm action and the early arrest of everyone involved. On Tuesday, relatives went to the post-mortem house and said Amit’s death resulted from the severe injuries inflicted during the assault.
The incident highlights how quickly an everyday disagreement in a public space can become dangerous. A verbal objection over conduct on a road should never lead to violence, particularly one involving a suspected group attack and an object used as a weapon.
CCTV Footage Under Review
DCP Central Atul Srivastava said the family initially did not agree to a post-mortem examination following Amit’s death. At the family’s request, police examined CCTV footage after relatives raised the possibility that the death may have stemmed from an accident.
“While checking the CCTV footage of the place where the incident had taken place, we found that four to five people were beating Amit,” Srivastava said.
Srivastava said police had questioned about a dozen people in connection with the matter, and four names had emerged during the inquiry. The footage is expected to remain important in establishing the sequence of events, identifying those present and testing the allegations made by the victim’s relatives.
Dharmendra Ram, SHO of Kakadeo police station, said a case had been registered after a complaint from Amit’s family. The investigation is now focused on locating the accused, examining available evidence and determining the roles of those involved in the alleged assault.
Family Seeks Accountability
For Amit’s family, the central issue is accountability for an attack they say left him critically injured and ultimately cost him his life. Their demand for swift police action comes as investigators continue questioning people connected with the events near Om Crossing.
The case also underlines the value of surveillance footage in incidents that unfold quickly and involve conflicting early accounts. Police initially reviewed the recordings to address the family’s concern about whether an accident could have occurred. The video instead appeared to show Amit being beaten by multiple people, shifting the focus firmly to the alleged assault.
Amit’s death has turned a late-night dispute into a serious criminal investigation. As the inquiry proceeds, police will need to establish the identities of all those involved, verify witness accounts and ensure that the evidence gathered reflects what happened on the road that Saturday night.
