Ayodhya Ram Mandir Donation Theft: Probe Widens as 30 More Employees Come Under Scrutiny

This development comes after the arrest of eight individuals suspected of misappropriating funds from the iconic temple’s public offerings. The Uttar Pradesh government, which oversees the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra trust, has initiated a thorough probe into the alleged financial irregularities, highlighting growing concerns over the management of donations.
Expanded Inquiry into Donation Management
According to sources close to the police inquiry, the initial focus was on the tallying of cash donations at the temple, a process managed by a team of approximately 50 individuals. Many of these employees were recruited through personal connections with the trust’s leadership, raising questions about transparency in hiring practices. Now, the investigation has broadened to examine the financial backgrounds of these recruits, with investigators scrutinizing whether their assets align with their reported incomes.
“This was not merely a case of administrative lapse or an error of judgment, but of deliberate negligence on the part of some people. Sensitive work involving public donations was entrusted through ad-hoc recruitment, with relatives and acquaintances of Trust functionaries finding their way into the system. The backgrounds of all such recruits are being verified, and their financial records are also being examined,” a senior police officer in Ayodhya said.
CCTV footage has emerged as crucial evidence in the case, exposing six of the eight accused in the theft. The footage captures them concealing currency bundles in their pockets and shoes during the donation tallying process at the pilgrim facilitation center. This visual proof has intensified pressure on the temple administration to account for the discrepancies in donation records, which were the catalyst for the police investigation.
Major Lapses in Supervision and Security
The formation of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) by the Uttar Pradesh government has led to the revelation that the thefts were part of a larger pattern of oversight failures. The SIT’s preliminary report, spanning nine pages, indicates that the issue stems from major lapses in supervision and security measures at the Ram Mandir. These shortcomings allowed unscrupulous individuals to exploit their positions within the donation-counting system, facilitating the embezzlement of funds.
Trust officials, including General Secretary Champat Rai and trustee Anil Mishra, have resigned in the wake of the inquiry, signaling the administration’s acknowledgment of the problem. The resignations underscore the gravity of the situation, as the trust is now under increased scrutiny for its handling of public contributions. The probe has also revealed that some employees were allegedly involved in collusion, with their actions going unnoticed for a considerable period.
