Flood Recovery Gains Momentum in Assam as Waters Withdraw
Indiadailyupdate.com – Assam’s flood crisis demonstrated positive developments on Tuesday, with receding waters bringing some relief to communities across multiple districts. Authorities confirmed that the mortality count has stabilized at 68, with no additional casualties or missing persons documented in the latest official update.
Relief operations continue at an expanded scale, with personnel from the National Disaster Response Force, State Disaster Response Force, and civil defence units working tirelessly. Currently, 90 temporary camps are housing 28,695 displaced residents, while 94 relief distribution centres remain fully operational to support affected populations.
Regional Impact Assessment
According to government statistics, the number of people impacted has decreased to 4.45 lakh across six districts, marking a significant reduction from the 5.24 lakh figure recorded on Sunday. The hardest-hit areas include Charaideo, which has seen 1.88 lakh residents affected, followed by Sivasagar with 1.44 lakh people, and Jorhat reporting 74,458 individuals.
Nagaon, Kamrup (Metropolitan), and Golaghat districts are also experiencing substantial flood impacts. While most areas show declining water levels, the Dhansiri (S) river continues to flow above its danger threshold at Numaligarh in Golaghat district.
Agricultural losses remain considerable, with 37,139.52 hectares of crop land still underwater. Infrastructure damage is widespread, affecting residential structures, transportation routes, and essential facilities throughout the affected zones.
Central Delegation and Recovery Efforts
A five-member team from the central government, headed by Ministry of Home Affairs Joint Secretary M. Ramachandrudu, conducted an assessment visit to Sivasagar on Monday to evaluate flood damage in Upper Assam. The delegation was joined by state ministers Keshab Mahanta and Bimal Borah, along with local administrators, as they examined conditions in the eastern part of the state.
On the infrastructure front, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma reported encouraging progress in power restoration. He noted on social media that the number of households without electricity has decreased by 25 percent as floodwaters gradually recede.
Public Health Initiatives
The state government has prioritized health and sanitation measures as part of its recovery strategy. Health departments have launched comprehensive disinfection and fogging campaigns in flooded villages to minimize the risk of vector-borne and waterborne illnesses.
Addressing livestock management concerns, Water Resources Minister Susanta Borgohain explained that authorities are implementing scientific burial procedures for animals that perished during the floods. He emphasized that this approach is essential for preventing water contamination and safeguarding community health during the recovery period.
