Political Leaders Prepare for Discussions
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay is anticipated to travel to Karnataka for important discussions concerning the Mekedatu dam controversy. Karnataka’s irrigation department officials have extended an email invitation to Tamil Nadu’s water resources department representatives for these deliberations. While waiting for an official response from the Tamil Nadu government, Agriculture Minister Vinoth confirmed that Chief Minister Vijay will attend the consultative gathering scheduled for August 3 in Karnataka.
“We will never allow the Mekedatu Dam, which is being urged to release water due to Tamil Nadu in the Cauvery, that is our right,” he stated firmly during his remarks.
Historical Background and Opposition to Talks
DMK leader and former Chief Minister M.K. Stalin has advised the current Chief Minister against entering negotiations with Karnataka over Cauvery water distribution. Stalin emphasized that extensive discussions spanning from the 1960s through the 1990s failed to produce any meaningful resolutions. The Cauvery Arbitration Board was subsequently established during V.P. Singh’s tenure as prime minister, when Kalaignar served as Chief Minister, following a Supreme Court directive.
“Even after that, the Karnataka state government continued to commit injustice in providing water to Tamil Nadu. In the past, whenever the idea of holding talks with the Karnataka government on the Cauvery water issue was raised, the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam government firmly rejected it. This is because the Karnataka state government is all talk and no action. Such talks will only drag out the issue rather than asserting rights,” he explained in a social media post.
