Alongside a couple of white spreads and a matching pillow, a thick black woollen blanket is supplied. The white pillow covers and bedsheets bearing the “INDIAN RAILWAYS” imprint have become iconic symbols of extended train travel across India.
Travelers employ various methods to utilize these items. Some lay the black blanket on their berth first, then place the white spreads on top. Others reverse this approach. A third group skips the white spreads entirely, preferring to sleep directly on the berth and cover themselves with the warmer black blankets rather than the thinner white sheets.
Why Two Bedsheets Are Provided
According to recent information, the dual white sheet arrangement serves a specific hygiene purpose. Each berth receives two white sheets to prevent passengers from having direct contact with the black blanket. The first white sheet functions as a bedsheet placed over the seat, while the second serves as an additional layer before the black blanket is used for warmth.
The black blankets are not washed after every train journey, and passengers are advised not to use them directly to cover themselves, the Railway Minister has stated.
While white bedsheets, pillow covers, and towels undergo cleaning after each journey, the black blankets receive washing only once or twice monthly, as reported by TV9 Marathi.
Replacement Schedule for Linen Items
Railway regulations establish clear timelines for replacing different linen items. Cotton bedsheets must be replaced after one year of service, whereas polyester versions last for two years. Pillow covers and face towels are utilized for nine months before being swapped out. Both pillows and blankets have a replacement cycle of two years.
This systematic approach ensures that passengers receive clean, comfortable bedding throughout their journeys while maintaining operational efficiency across the vast railway network.
