Census 2027: Kolkata Begins Digital Enumeration on August 1
Indiadailyupdate.com – The countdown for Census 2027 has officially begun in Kolkata, with the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) launching its digital enumeration exercise on August 1. This comprehensive digital initiative marks a significant shift in how India’s largest city will conduct its population count. The first phase, known as Self Enumeration, will run through August 15, allowing residents to complete an online form and receive a unique 11-digit identification number. Following this initial period, the Field Enumeration phase commences on August 16 and continues until September 14. During this critical stage, trained enumerators visit households to verify information by entering the 11-digit SE number into their mobile application. These field workers also provide essential assistance to individuals who could not successfully submit their details during the online self-enumeration window.
Understanding the Census 2027 Timeline
KMC Administrator and Municipal Commissioner Smita Pandey provided clarity on the naming convention for this major demographic exercise. “On March 1, 2027 we will declare the census, which is why the name Census 2027 has been given,” Pandey explained. The scope of this operation is extensive, covering 8,105 housing blocks distributed across 144 wards within the KMC jurisdiction. This represents one of the most comprehensive digital census efforts undertaken by any Indian metropolitan area.
Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari is scheduled to complete his Self Enumeration details on the morning of August 1, setting an example for residents. The operation involves a substantial workforce of 8,200 enumerators in total, including 1,400 supervisors who will oversee the entire process. Training sessions have already been conducted twice, with a third session running from August 3 to 5 for those requiring additional preparation before deployment.
Student Participation and Community Engagement
To boost participation rates and ensure comprehensive coverage, KMC has established a strategic partnership with the state school education department. Students from Class 8 through 12 will actively participate from 700 government and government-aided institutions alongside 300 private schools. The corporation considers students to be digitally proficient and expects them to encourage family members and neighbors to register for Census 2027.

We have appealed to class 8-12 students through the headmistresses to appoint a census prefect. If children are involved, they become enthusiastic. They have to take a pledge to enrol at least 10 families.
Pandey noted that registering a single person requires listing other household members as well. She emphasized that the procedure is straightforward for young participants and their engagement accelerates the overall process. This intergenerational approach ensures that both digital natives and older residents receive appropriate support during the enumeration period.
Logistics and Accessibility Measures
KMC plans to conduct comprehensive awareness campaigns in slums and residential colonies to ensure maximum participation. High-rise apartment complexes will also receive encouragement to participate in the Self Enumeration phase. Starting August 1, the principal census officer along with solid waste management department staff will complete the online registration forms for residents who need assistance.
Each borough will establish a dedicated help desk staffed by five teams. Pandey described this as an additional measure to build awareness since field enumerators are not yet deployed. Residents can access the Self Enumeration portal by scanning a QR code or visiting the dedicated website at http://se.census.gov.in, which becomes operational at midnight on August 1. This multi-channel approach ensures that residents can participate through their preferred method, whether online or through in-person assistance at borough help desks.
