Internal Divisions Rock Himachal Pradesh Congress Unit

Not only is the government operating on political crutches, but the party’s internal dynamics also expose deep-seated divisions. A significant section of Congress leaders in Himachal Pradesh has expressed dissatisfaction with Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu’s leadership approach. According to reliable sources, state unit in-charge Rajani Patel has submitted a comprehensive report to the Congress leadership, detailing the current situation across all 68 Assembly seats in Himachal Pradesh. The report recommends immediate intervention from the high command to reorganize party activities and position the Congress as a formidable force in next year’s Assembly elections in Himachal Pradesh.
The submitted report primarily advocates for a change in the government’s leadership structure, with modifications to the Chief Minister’s leadership style offered as a secondary option. This would help transform the Himachal Pradesh Congress unit into a genuinely challenging political force. “Himachal Pradesh is a small state and therefore much of the national attention is not given to it. But the state from the very beginning has been more or less running like that, where many have not been satisfied with Sukhu’s leadership style.”
“It is also because there is no sense of togetherness in the party and Sukhu has not been able to narrow that gap,” a Congress leader said.
Apart from persistent factionalism, the Himachal Pradesh Congress has navigated numerous hurdles since forming the government in 2022. The state has faced back-to-back natural disasters alongside deteriorating financial health, making it increasingly difficult for the Congress-led administration to fulfill its promises and drive meaningful progress in Himachal Pradesh.
Mounting Challenges and Anti-Incumbency
The political situation in Himachal Pradesh took a dramatic turn in February 2024 when the Congress suffered its first major political setback. Despite holding a majority, the party lost the state’s lone Rajya Sabha seat due to cross-voting by half a dozen of its legislators in favor of BJP candidate Harsh Mahajan. The Congress responded decisively by having the Assembly Speaker immediately disqualify the defectors under the anti-defection law. This episode triggered a significant crisis and raised serious questions about internal party unity in Himachal Pradesh.
Nevertheless, the party managed to retain its Assembly majority through strategic bypoll victories and steady governance. As the Himachal Pradesh government approaches completing four years in office, political observers note growing anti-incumbency against the Congress. While the party has weathered multiple crises, the critical question remains how the central leadership will respond, particularly given its demonstrated interest in managing the faction-ridden Punjab unit.
“The Sukhu government is facing visible anti-incumbency and right now it seems difficult for the party to stage a comeback, because there is less trust in the leadership and in the governance. Now all will depend on how the high command deals with the state unit and its leadership and how it would prepare a blueprint to contest the upcoming elections,” a political analyst commented regarding Himachal Pradesh’s political future.
