UP Elections: Mayawati Clarifies Akash Anand’s Role in BSP Candidate Selection

Since Friday, various media outlets and social media platforms have been reporting that the BSP National Convenor is now actively involved in the candidate selection process for the upcoming Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections. According to recent reports, Akash Anand is expected to travel to Delhi in the coming days to coordinate with the party’s social media team, with the goal of strengthening outreach to younger voters who participated in recent student demonstrations in the national capital.
However, Mayawati, the 70-year-old National President of the Bahujan Samaj Party, has firmly addressed these rumors through a detailed post on X. The former Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh made it unequivocally clear that she continues to hold the final say on all candidate nominations, not just for the UP elections but for every BSP contest across India. While acknowledging Akash Anand’s growing influence within the party, Mayawati specifically outlined his role during the 2027 Assembly elections, clarifying that he will focus on mobilizing party workers throughout the state rather than making candidate selection decisions.
“All sorts of rumours are being spread about the party’s national coordinator, Mr Akash Anand, in which there is not even a shred of truth,” Mayawati stated in her clarification.
Mayawati’s Hands-On Approach to Candidate Selection
Party insiders reveal that the BSP will officially announce its candidates for the UP elections following a series of public meetings that have been approved by Mayawati herself. The party president has personally conducted interviews and finalized the list of two dozen candidates so far. Additionally, she has held multiple selection sessions at the BSP’s state headquarters in Lucknow, where she directed party officials to complete the selection process at both state and divisional levels. Mayawati has emphasized that her approval remains mandatory for all remaining candidate positions before they can be officially declared.
“Candidates for all [remaining] seats will also be determined by me,” Mayawati reaffirmed her authority over the selection process.
The BSP is planning to organize its cadre for the UP elections under Akash Anand’s guidance, working alongside other senior party leaders. This strategic arrangement is seen as a deliberate effort to strengthen the party’s organizational structure and counter the growing influence of the Azad Samaj Party (Kanshi Ram), which has emerged as a formidable competitor in Uttar Pradesh politics.
ASP (Kanshi Ram) Sets the Stage with Early Candidate Announcements
While the BSP is finalizing its approach, the Chandrashekhar Azad-led ASP (Kanshi Ram) has already taken the initiative by announcing its first batch of 45 candidates for the 2027 UP polls. These individuals have been designated as “Prabharis” or in-charges for their respective constituencies, with official candidate declarations expected as the election date approaches. Saurabh Kishore, the party’s state vice-president, provided comprehensive details about the composition of this initial candidate list.
The 45 candidates announced by ASP (Kanshi Ram) reflect a diverse representation, with 18 belonging to the Scheduled Castes, 16 to the Other Backward Classes, 10 Muslims, and one Sikh. Notably, five of the SC candidates will be contesting from unreserved constituencies, specifically Chharra, Lucknow Cantonment, Govind Nagar, Vishwanathganj, and Bikapur. Kishore indicated that the party will continue to announce additional candidates in the coming days as the electoral process progresses.
Announcing candidates ahead of the official notification gives them valuable time to develop comprehensive campaign strategies and connect with voters in their constituencies. Both the ASP (Kanshi Ram) and the BSP have historically built their political appeal around Dalit and OBC communities, making them natural competitors in the UP elections. In 2022, Chandrashekhar Azad had proposed a significant alliance with the BSP to unite Dalit politics and consolidate vote share in the state, though this proposal ultimately did not come to fruition.
As the 2027 UP elections approach, the contest between Mayawati’s BSP and Azad’s ASP (Kanshi Ram) is shaping up to be one of the most significant political battles in Uttar Pradesh. With Akash Anand playing an increasingly prominent role in the BSP’s campaign machinery, the party is positioning itself to make a strong showing in what promises to be a closely contested election.
