By Saturday, 2026 had reached the satellite-era record for the latest point in a season without a storm producing sustained winds of 74 mph, the threshold for hurricane status. Meteorologist Nick Novella of the government’s Weather Prediction Center noted that a few seasons before 1950 also went this long without a hurricane, although observations from that period were less reliable.

Only five tropical storms had formed in the Atlantic, and all were weak and short-lived. No hurricane had developed, with no likely hurricane expected for at least another week. That makes the season remarkably quiet at a time when activity often rises quickly.

Atlantic Storm Energy Is Well Below Average

The combined measure of storm number, strength and duration was at its lowest level for this point in the season since 1950. Colorado State University hurricane specialist Phil Klotzbach said Atlantic activity was only 7% of its normal seasonal level.

“It’s just hammering the Atlantic. It’s just impressive,” Klotzbach said. “We haven’t even had anything really even close to a hurricane.”

El Niño Creates a Hostile Environment for Storms

El Niño is a natural warming pattern in parts of the equatorial Pacific, but its effects can reshape weather far from the Pacific Ocean. In the Atlantic, it has combined strong wind shear, dry air and sinking air linked to high pressure, producing especially unfavorable conditions for tropical cyclone formation.

Wind shear is the biggest obstacle. Hurricanes need their circulation and thunderstorms to remain vertically aligned. Strong winds at different levels of the atmosphere can pull a developing storm apart, moving thunderstorms away from its center and preventing it from strengthening.

Between Africa and the Caribbean, an area where many major Atlantic storms usually form, wind shear was roughly 45 mph stronger than a tropical cyclone can tolerate, according to University at Albany atmospheric science professor Kristen Corbosiero.

“It’s really staggering, just how inhospitable the Atlantic is to anything that could form a tropical cyclone right now,” Corbosiero said.

Dry air, African dust, limited weather disturbances and descending air over parts of the Atlantic have added to the suppression. University of Miami hurricane expert Brian McNoldy described the effect bluntly: developing systems have their “heads” cut off before they have a chance to grow.

Why Warm Atlantic Water Has Not Produced More Hurricanes

Massachusetts Institute of Technology meteorology professor Kerry Emanuel said the temperature difference between the ocean and atmosphere matters. Hurricanes transfer heat from the sea into the air, so rapidly warming air above the water can reduce the contrast that helps power storms.

Atlantic water temperatures have not adjusted to El Niño as quickly as the atmosphere. If El Niño weakens while unusually warm water remains, conditions could become more supportive of storm development in a later season.
