Three Held After Late-Night Gunfire in Gurugram’s Sector 62
Indiadailyupdate.com – A late-night police operation in Gurugram’s Sector 62 ended with two suspected interstate drug smugglers and a Crime Branch officer injured in a gunfight, while a third man was detained after a chase. The confrontation took place on Friday night, and police initiated further legal action on Saturday.
The three men have been identified as Marfat, also known as Maru, 32, and Phool Babu Sheikh, 26, both from Bali Murshidabad, along with Shrikul Sheikh, 37, from Nadia in West Bengal.
Marfat and Phool suffered gunshot wounds to their legs during retaliatory firing by the police. A Crime Branch officer sustained an injury to the arm after being hit by a bullet. The two injured suspects remain under medical care and will be formally arrested once doctors declare them fit. Shrikul was apprehended at the scene after attempting to escape.
Checkpoint Set Up After Robbery Alert
The Sector-65 Crime Branch received information that three armed men were allegedly preparing to commit a robbery. Officers subsequently established a checkpoint on the Nangli Umarpur-to-Sector 62 road to intercept the group.
The suspects reached the area at about 11pm. Instead of stopping, they allegedly opened fire and fled from the police team. Officers gave chase and stopped them roughly one kilometre from the checkpoint, where the exchange of fire continued.
“Acting on the tip-off, the team set up a checkpoint on the road from Nangli Umarpur to Sector-62. The trio arrived at the spot around 11pm, but fled after opening fire on the police team,” Turan said.
One bullet struck a police vehicle during the pursuit, while another injured the Crime Branch officer. Police said the suspects fired six rounds and officers fired three rounds in response.
“Police chased and intercepted the suspects almost a kilometre later, where the suspects fired at the police again. One of the bullets hit a police vehicle and another injured an officer,” he added.
MDMA and Firearms Recovered
During the operation, police recovered 136 grams of MDMA, a pistol, a country-made firearm, an empty cartridge and a motorcycle. The seizure forms part of the investigation into alleged drug smuggling and the reported plan to commit robbery.
Phool was already wanted in a drug-smuggling case, and Gurugram police had announced a reward for information leading to his arrest. The case underscores the cross-state nature of the investigation, as all three men are linked to West Bengal while the police action occurred in Haryana.
Police records show that Marfat faces four previous cases involving assault, theft, counterfeit currency and drug smuggling. Phool has two criminal cases registered against him, while Shrikul has one case related to drug smuggling.
Case Registered Under Multiple Laws
On the complaint of a Crime Branch official, Sector-65 police station registered an FIR on Saturday. The case includes an allegation of attempt to murder, along with provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, the Arms Act and the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act.
The legal provisions cited in the FIR reflect the separate aspects of the incident: the alleged attack on police personnel, possession or use of weapons, and the recovery of a controlled substance. Investigators will examine the recovered firearms, cartridge, motorcycle and suspected narcotics as part of the case.
The next formal step for Marfat and Phool will depend on their medical clearance. Once they are declared fit, police are expected to complete their arrest procedures and continue questioning the three suspects about the alleged narcotics network, the recovered material and the events that led to the confrontation.
For residents travelling through the Sector 62 and Nangli Umarpur corridor, the episode highlights why police checkpoints and late-night patrols are often deployed after intelligence inputs involving armed suspects. The inquiry remains focused on establishing the alleged robbery plan, the origin and intended distribution of the MDMA, and the role of each of the three men in the case.
