Blame War Erupts After West Bengal Deputy Speaker Asish Banerjee Found Dead
Indiadailyupdate.com – The death of five-time MLA and West Bengal Assembly Deputy Speaker Asish Banerjee on Sunday has ignited a fierce exchange between the BJP and the Trinamool Congress camp led by Mamata Banerjee. Each side pointed fingers at the other over what may have driven the veteran leader to take his own life.
The Discovery
Banerjee’s body was discovered hanging inside a TMC office located close to his home in the Rampurhat area of Birbhum district. A note, described as a suicide letter, was found beside him. In it, he reportedly asked that no individual be blamed for his passing.
Mamata Banerjee’s Condolence
The TMC chief took to X to mourn the loss, describing what she called the “immense mental and emotional strain” he supposedly endured in his last days.
“The harassment and mental pressure he faced, despite his long record of public service, should make all of us pause and reflect on the human cost of relentless political hostility.”
Notably, she made no mention of the BJP in that post. But party colleague and Lok Sabha MP Kunal Ghosh did not hold back, declaring that Banerjee had perished as a victim of the “BJP’s culture of threats and intimidation.”
Suvendu Adhikari Pushes Back
West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari pushed back against those accusations. He stressed that he maintained a “good relationship” with the deceased and insisted Banerjee was a decent political figure who also enjoyed cordial ties with local BJP leaders.
“Will probe if anyone threatened him,”
the CM stated, according to a PTI report. He further suggested that “corrupt people in the TMC might try to intimidate” Banerjee’s family and urged them to cooperate fully with the police investigation. His mobile phone is now under examination.
“Let the police check his phone call records and find out who he had been talking to. Police will see if he was being blackmailed. He was a gentleman, although the same cannot be said about some of his party colleagues.”
The remark landed as a pointed jab at the Mamata camp.
A Fracture Within TMC
Context matters here: despite decades of service under successive TMC governments, Banerjee is alleged to have pulled away from the Mamata camp following his defeat in the 2026 elections. His Facebook page, according to available records, carries no TMC-linked posts after the BJP’s historic electoral victory. THE WEEK was unable to independently confirm reports that he had been weighing a move toward either the Ritabrata-led rebel faction of TMC MLAs or the BJP itself.
