Seven Dead After Blaze Engulfs Pilgrim Hotel Near Tarapith Temple

Indiadailyupdate.com – A fire that swept through a four-storey lodging facility near the Tarapith temple in Birbhum district, West Bengal, claimed at least seven lives on Monday morning. Several additional guests sustained injuries as flames erupted around 5 a.m. on the ground floor while most occupants were still asleep.

“The death toll is seven now,” a senior police officer confirmed to PTI. Fire crews pulled 11 survivors from the burning structure. Wounded guests were rushed to Rampurhat Government Medical College and Hospital; two required transfer for specialised care, and one was released after initial assessment.

A Family’s Night of Terror

The hotel had been packed with devotees who had stayed overnight to complete rituals marking the final Monday of the Shrawan month. Among those who made it out was Akshay Dhivar, who fled with his entire family. He described the moments of panic to reporters:

“I was on the ground floor, in a room next to the reception. I was trying to get out when I saw flames entering the room. My two 10-year-old children, my wife and my sister were in one room. My mother and another sister were in another room. We were trapped in the bathroom. We turned on the water. We broke the bathroom glass. I was trying to breathe. The hotel was destroyed.”

How the Blaze Started

Hotel management attributes the outbreak to a short circuit inside an air-conditioning unit. Kalyan Pal, the owner’s son, spoke to News18 about the sequence of events. He said the night watchman first noticed flames on one floor and at once called out to a colleague.

“By the time they tried to bring down the jumper, the electrical wires had already caught fire. At the same time, the hotel’s power supply was shut off. Before that, the fire alarm bell was sounded, causing those staying in the hotel rooms to become alert and start coming outside. However, the danger increased when the smoke gradually began to rise upward, and many people started having difficulty breathing because of the smoke.”

The rapid upward spread of smoke, combined with the near-total destruction of the building, turned what might have been a contained incident into a deadly catastrophe for the pilgrims who had gathered for the month’s closing rites.
