The operation, according to local MLA N. Elaiyaraja, involved an offer of ₹35 crore to sway his vote on a proposed assembly resolution targeting the Speaker. This accusation marks a significant development in the political tensions unfolding within the state.
Elaiyaraja submitted a formal complaint to the Chennai Police Commissioner, alleging that he was approached with a bribe ranging from ₹35 crore to ₹50 crore. The transaction was orchestrated via Indian Political Democratic Strategies (IPDS), a group masquerading as a polling firm. This setup was meant to obscure the DMK’s direct involvement, with Thirunavukkarasu, the organization’s founder, reportedly handling the negotiations behind the scenes.
Constitutional Vulnerabilities and Strategic Moves
The opposition’s focus on the House Speaker is seen as a targeted maneuver. Under the Tenth Schedule of the Indian Constitution, the Speaker possesses significant authority to disqualify members who defect. By launching a no-confidence motion against the Speaker, the opposition aims to weaken this safeguard, potentially opening the door for engineered defections to destabilize the government.
“Agents acting for the opposition offered TVK legislators massive payouts to support a no-confidence motion against the Assembly Speaker,” said Electricity Minister R. Nirmal Kumar. “This is a desperate attempt by the DMK to reclaim power through illicit financial influence rather than democratic support.”
Kumar highlighted the disparity in campaign expenditures, contrasting his party’s restrained spending with the alleged corruption and electoral malpractice of rivals. The case has now evolved beyond local bribery, implicating high-ranking figures like V. Senthil Balaji, the former DMK minister and current Coimbatore South MLA.

According to insiders, the TVK leadership’s decision to link Balaji to the conspiracy stems from his perceived role in a stampede incident during Vijay’s visit to Karur in September 2025. The government claims Balaji’s actions that day led to the tragedy, and his inclusion in the CBI investigation is tied to evidence he provided. Initially, plans to also involve former chief minister M.K. Stalin were considered, but they were abandoned to avoid backlash.
Balaji’s recent press conference, responding to Kumar’s white paper on the electricity board’s finances, further complicated the TVK’s narrative. The meeting between accused Naresh and Ashok Kumar, his brother, is cited as a critical step in the conspiracy. A police statement explicitly links Thirunavukkarasu to Balaji and Ashok Kumar, suggesting direct instructions from the latter.
