IMD Issues Heavy Rainfall Alert as Assam Flood Crisis Deepens
Indiadailyupdate.com – The India Meteorological Department has forecasted intense to extreme precipitation accompanied by thunderstorms across isolated regions of Assam for the upcoming three-day period. This weather pattern is also expected to influence neighboring Arunachal Pradesh and Nagaland, potentially worsening conditions in border districts of the flood-affected state.
Human and Infrastructure Toll Mounts
Official statistics confirm that seventy-eight lives have been lost due to the ongoing inundation. More than three hundred thousand individuals have experienced disruption from rising waters across seven districts that remain largely underwater. The hardest-hit localities encompass Golaghat, Jorhat, Nagaon, Sivasagar, Charaideo, Biswanath, and Kamrup Metropolitan.
Agricultural losses are substantial, with over twenty-one thousand five hundred hectares of farmland severely damaged. According to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority, floodwaters continue to disrupt twenty-one revenue circles and five hundred fifty-one villages throughout the region.
Relief Operations Underway
Charaideo district has emerged as the most severely impacted area, with one hundred thirty-seven thousand five hundred sixty-one residents affected. Emergency response teams have established seventy-one relief camps housing more than sixteen thousand five hundred displaced families. Additionally, thirty relief distribution centres are providing support to over seventy-two thousand people.
Damage to critical infrastructure spans embankments, transportation routes, and educational facilities. Livestock and animal losses are significant, with official records indicating more than eleven thousand animals swept away and seventeen thousand heads of cattle affected.
Urban neighborhoods have not been spared from the deluge. Affected localities include Padumbari, Boragaon, Excelcare Hospital, Lachit Nagar, Zoo Road, Rukminigaon, Anil Nagar, Nabin Nagar, Satgaon, Beharbari, Hatigaon, Wireless, Jorabat, and Kamarkuchi near Zubeen Khetra.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah held discussions with Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Wednesday to assess the developing situation. While water levels have begun to recede in several areas, many residents cannot return home because their dwellings have either sustained structural damage or become filled with mud and sediment. Shah pledged comprehensive support from the central government to aid recovery and restoration initiatives.
