E20 Ethanol Mandate Faces Renewed Opposition on August 1

Arvind Kejriwal, head of the Aam Aadmi Party, and Tehseen Poonawalla, an entrepreneur and television personality, will each organize separate rallies. These events follow an initial demonstration on July 5 concerning E20 fuel, which contains twenty percent ethanol mixed with conventional petrol. That earlier protest occurred just before the Cockroach Janta Party’s campaign regarding NEET examination paper leaks captured national attention at Jantar Mantar.
Kejriwal’s Town Hall Initiative
The AAP leader plans to host what he calls a “National Town Hall against E20” at Delhi’s Constitution Club on August 1. A town hall functions as an open gathering where citizens and officials discuss pressing matters publicly. In a message shared on X, Kejriwal mentioned that a distinguished individual would join him to hear citizens’ concerns and potentially make decisions regarding the ethanol policy. He encouraged widespread participation in the event.
Previously, the AAP initiated a digital petition requesting that E20 fuel become optional rather than mandatory. The party reports accumulating approximately two lakh signatures for this cause. Kejriwal has connected this movement to the achievements of the CJP demonstrations, which successfully prompted former Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan to resign and triggered several educational policy adjustments by the central government.
I now urge the Prime Minister to resolve the E20-blended petrol issue as well. People are facing serious problems. Their vehicles are getting damaged, and fuel mileage is declining.
Poonawalla’s Solo Walk and Hunger Strike
Simultaneously, Poonawalla announced plans for a solitary march beginning at 10 AM from APJ Abdul Kalam Road toward Gandhi Smriti in the capital. Alongside this walk, he declared both a silent demonstration and a fasting protest opposing the compulsory nature of the E20 policy while supporting freedom of expression across India.
Since both venues lie within five kilometers of one another, organizers anticipate substantial attendance from drivers, specialists, and other demonstrators who oppose the absence of fuel selection options for their automobiles. Earlier, Poonawalla’s group presented four primary requests. The foremost demand involves ensuring nationwide availability of E0, E5, E10, and E20 variants so motorists retain purchasing freedom. Additional requirements include transparency through publication of all E20-related documentation, government intervention for vehicles manufactured before 2023 that allegedly suffered damage, and suspension of the national rollout until adequate infrastructure exists.
Gadkari Defends the Ethanol Programme
Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari has consistently supported the ethanol initiative despite growing criticism. He emphasized that the blending programme underwent thorough evaluation involving automobile producers, component suppliers, and independent testing bodies. During a written response submitted to the Lok Sabha, Gadkari stated that durability assessments revealed no engine failures attributable to E20 usage.
Tests covering parameters such as engine drivability, startability, corrosion resistance and material compatibility have confirmed that E20 is safe for use under prescribed standards.
While acknowledging potential fuel economy reductions ranging between two and six percent based on vehicle type and age, Gadkari maintained that manufacturers reported no permanent alterations. He previously invited critics experiencing difficulties to approach him directly. Following this invitation, Poonawalla claimed that Delhi authorities prevented protesters from accessing the minister.

Despite these efforts, Gadkari subsequently characterized the demonstrations as orchestrated efforts and misleading claims. All attention now turns toward whether Saturday’s combined protests can replicate the momentum achieved by the CJP movement.
