Resistance Front Takes Credit for Fatal Labourers’ Attack

This group, widely recognized as the LeT proxy behind Pahalgam attack, issued a statement through its media wing confirming their involvement in the Friday evening assault. The TRF’s claim comes just weeks after they were identified as the primary force responsible for the devastating April 22, 2025, Pahalgam assault that resulted in 26 fatalities and triggered India’s Operation Sindoor in May 2025.
The Kulgam incident unfolded at a brick kiln located in the Kelam area of Jammu and Kashmir’s Kulgam district. According to eyewitness accounts and official reports, unidentified gunmen opened fire randomly at the construction site, targeting migrant labourers who were working during the evening shift. The sudden attack left two workers severely injured, with one succumbing to his wounds before reaching medical facilities. Local media sources identified the victims as Deepak and Bhupinder, both migrant workers who had traveled from Chhattisgarh to seek employment in the region.
Medical Response and Victim Details
Deepak, one of the victims, passed away at the scene due to severe gunshot injuries before paramedics could transport him to a hospital. Bhupinder, who sustained multiple bullet wounds, was immediately airlifted to the Government Medical College Hospital in Anantnag for emergency treatment. Medical personnel at the hospital confirmed that Bhupinder’s condition, while serious, is stable following initial treatment. The incident has sparked outrage among local communities and migrant worker associations, who have called for enhanced security measures in the region.
Comprehensive Security Operations Launched
Security forces responded rapidly to the Kulgam shooting, deploying multiple units including army personnel, CRPF troops, and Jammu and Kashmir Police. A cordon was immediately established around the attack site, and a systematic search operation was launched to apprehend the perpetrators. Security personnel conducted house-to-house inquiries throughout the vicinity, questioning residents and gathering intelligence about the attackers’ movements. The operation involved setting up checkpoints on major routes leading out of Kulgam to prevent the suspects from escaping.

Regional Terrorist Activity and Counter-Operations
The Kulgam shooting represents the second major terrorist incident in the region within a short span, following the attack on police constable Ashiq Hussain in Anantnag on July 23. Hussain, a head constable from the 3rd battalion of the Indian Reserve Police, was shot dead at Lal Chowk market by a terrorist while on duty. According to Kashmir IGP VK Birdi, Hussain was part of a security team protecting the Lal Chowk-Kokernag axis. Despite returning fire, Hussain succumbed to his injuries, and the assailant managed to escape by blending with the crowd.
In the aftermath of both incidents, security forces have intensified counter-terrorism operations across multiple districts including Budgam, Baramulla, Ganderbal, Shopian, Kulgam, and Anantnag. Approximately 700 suspected over-ground workers (OGWs) have been detained for questioning and verification in connection with the Anantnag attack alone. Similar operations in other districts have resulted in hundreds more detentions. The TRF, as the LeT proxy behind Pahalgam attack, has been increasingly active in the region, with security agencies monitoring their movements closely.
Local communities have expressed concern over the rising frequency of terrorist attacks, particularly targeting innocent civilians and security personnel. The government has assured that enhanced security deployments will continue until the situation stabilizes completely.
