Unlike the traditional Victoria House gathering, this year’s Martyr’s Day observance drew devotees from across West Bengal, providing encouragement to the veteran politician amid ongoing defections to rival factions.

Following the Calcutta High Court’s approval for public demonstrations, the Trinamool Congress supremo used the occasion to reinforce her position as the legitimate leader. She expressed gratitude toward the judiciary while acknowledging the court’s permission for her faction to organize the demonstration. The substantial turnout served as validation of her continued support base.

“Despite the high court order, the way they (BJP) troubled us, we know under whose orders it happened,” the party chief remarked, directing her comments toward the ruling party’s administrative apparatus.

Tensions had escalated the previous evening when the faction accused opponents of deliberately undermining their preparations. Both the party leader and her nephew Abhishek arrived at the venue around 10:05 pm, remaining through the entire night alongside prominent figures including Mahua Moitra, Kalyan Banerjee, Derek O’Brien, Kunal Ghosh, and Dola Sen.

Challenging Detractors and Reaffirming Party Identity

During her extended address, the veteran politician emphasized her status as the party’s founding president while asserting that her faction represents the authentic Trinamool. She issued a direct challenge to critics, stating she would welcome those who wished to join the BJP. “I have no problem. I have my youth and new people to take your place,” she added confidently.

Abhishek Banerjee, serving as both nephew and Member of Parliament, urged his aunt to maintain a firm stance regarding potential returnees. “History favours those who are loyal, not those who are traitors,” he observed. He further noted that while certain elements seek to fracture the Trinamool Congress, the organization would ultimately grow stronger through this trial.

The July 21 address framed the current political situation as a “freedom revolution,” encouraging party workers to embrace imprisonment as part of this historic moment. “Those who are fighting today are the real workers,” she stressed, indicating that leadership transitions to rival groups—including the BJP, the Ritabrata bloc, and twenty Lok Sabha members who joined the Tripura-based NCPI—would not diminish her faction’s legitimacy.

“We are the real Trinamool. Removing the signboard does not change things. That is the BJP signboard,” the party chief clarified.

National Outreach and Delhi Protest Connection

Employing her signature “Khela Hobe” slogan—meaning “Let the games begin”—the party leader extended invitations to opposition figures across the state and the nation. She revealed ongoing communications with various opposition parties and expressed confidence that her struggle would progress from rural areas and districts all the way to the capital.

Against the backdrop of Delhi Police’s recent actions against student demonstrations organized by the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP), Mamata Banerjee announced her willingness to participate in those protests if circumstances demanded. “If need be, I will go to Delhi and take part in the protest,” she stated.

The TMC supremo was joined on stage by Kalyan Banerjee, Mahua Moitra, Rajeev Kumar, Dola Sen, Babul Supriyo, Kunal Ghosh, and Sobhandeb Chattopadhyay. Although the faction faces numerical disadvantage compared to the rebel group conducting a parallel Martyr’s Day rally approximately one kilometer away on Mayo Road, the enthusiastic crowd and steadfast leadership demonstrated that her reputation as a determined political fighter remains intact.
