Mumbai Weather: IMD Issues Heavy Rain Warning for Next 4 Days
Indiadailyupdate.com – Mumbai is currently dealing with heavy downpours that have caused flooding in low-lying neighborhoods and hampered transportation via roads and railways. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has activated a weather warning, predicting sustained heavy to very heavy rainfall for the city over the coming three to four days.
Regional Rainfall Patterns
According to the IMD, intense rain bands—elongated clusters of precipitation linked to sudden, extreme rainfall—are active over the western sea, contributing to the city’s current weather woes. These bands are anticipated to bring significant rain to several key zones, including Santacruz, Andheri, Khar, Bandra, Powai, and Kurla. The affected areas may see rainfall rates of 50 to 60 mm per hour, leading to localized waterlogging.
“Heavy rain is expected in many areas of the city over the next few hours due to the active Very Intense Rain Bands over the sea to the west,” stated the IMD.
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has noted that the city received over 200 mm of rain in the past 24 hours. Commuters in prime locations such as Dadar, Parel, Hindmata, Charkop, Worli, Goregaon, and Andheri have faced disruptions from flooded streets and slowed traffic.
Coastal Tides and Flooding Risks
IMD forecasts a high tide of 4.27 metres at 1.45 pm on Thursday, with a subsequent high tide of 3.71 metres at 1.31 am on Friday. A low tide of 1.82 metres is expected on Thursday evening, adding to the challenges of managing water levels in vulnerable zones.

Further, the IMD has extended its caution beyond Mumbai, forecasting heavy rainfall in Konkan, Vidarbha, and Central Maharashtra for the next four days. Marathwada is also under threat, with some regions likely to see substantial rain.
Alerts for Regional Districts
The department has issued an orange alert for districts like Palghar, Pune, Satara, Raigad, Kolhapur, Sindhudurg, Amravati, Nagpur, and Gondia, signaling heavy to very heavy rainfall. In the ghat regions of Ratnagiri and Pune, a red alert has been raised for the possibility of extremely heavy downpours. Meanwhile, Nashik, Jalgaon, and other Marathwada areas face a yellow alert for moderate to heavy rain accompanied by thunderstorms.
“Thunderstorms, lightning, and strong winds with speeds up to 40-50 km/h are expected during this period,” warned the IMD.
Additional forecasts highlight that Vidarbha districts will also encounter strong winds of 40 to 50 km/h, intensifying the impact of the rainfall. These conditions pose ongoing challenges for residents and infrastructure across the region.
