During a public gathering in Agra on Saturday, the BJP leader made his position crystal clear regarding taxpayer funds and their allocation for memorials. The Chief Minister strongly criticized the previous Samajwadi Party administration’s initiative to construct a museum dedicated to the Mughal emperor Aurangzeb, calling it inappropriate for a city with such rich Maratha heritage.
“In Agra, the very city where Chhatrapati Shivaji displayed his extraordinary valour, the SP government was busy building a Mughal Museum. Public funds would not be used for a museum named after an invader; instead, a museum would be constructed in the name of India’s national heroes,” the CM declared with conviction.
Adityanath pledged that his administration would complete the construction of a magnificent Chhatrapati Shivaji museum before the year concludes. He additionally revealed that authorities have already sanctioned the purchase of the historic ‘kothi’—the residence where the great Maratha warrior once lodged during his extended stay in Agra. This acquisition represents not just a real estate transaction, but a symbolic reclaiming of Agra’s cultural identity.
Agra’s Comprehensive Development Vision
The Chief Minister outlined an ambitious vision for Agra’s transformation that extends far beyond the museum project. He mentioned that comprehensive preparations are already in motion to establish an international airport that will serve the historic city. According to Adityanath, Agra is rapidly evolving into a dual-purpose hub, strategically catering to both industrial growth in the Braj region and tourism expansion. He emphasized that transportation links have seen considerable improvement recently, positioning the city for future prosperity.
On Thursday, the Supreme Court granted crucial permission for the Taj Trapezium Zone Authority to review approximately 400 outstanding applications from Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises seeking to operate without causing pollution in the ecologically delicate area surrounding the Taj Mahal. However, the judiciary imposed strict conditions on these approvals. Experts from the Central Empowered Committee and the National Environmental Engineering Research Institute must examine each proposal carefully before any clearance is granted.
The court specified that any application facing objections “shall not be accepted without the leave of this court.” The matter was heard by a distinguished bench consisting of Chief Justice of India Surya Kant alongside Justices Joymalya Bagchi and V Mohana. This long-standing issue involves industrial operations within the 10,400-square-kilometre Taj Trapezium Zone. Since 1996, the Supreme Court has enforced rigorous limitations in this region to safeguard the iconic monument from environmental degradation.
“We will complete the construction of a grand museum named after Chhatrapati Shivaji by the end of this year. We have also approved the acquisition of the ‘kothi’ (residence) in Agra where Chhatrapati Shivaji had stayed,” PTI quoted him as saying.
“We have already taken steps towards establishing an international airport in Agra. Agra is now developing into a new centre not only for industrial activity in the Braj region, but also for tourism. Connectivity has improved significantly.”
