Rahul Gandhi Demands Action: ‘Sack Amit Shah’ Over Student Protest Crackdown

Speaking to journalists at the Congress party headquarters on Wednesday, Gandhi stood firm on his parliamentary allegations that the Union Home Minister personally authorised the use of force during the Jantar Mantar demonstration. His comments came mere hours after they ignited a heated debate in the Lok Sabha during discussions on the anti-paper leak legislation.
Referring to the violent intervention by law enforcement against the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) demonstrators on July 20, Gandhi made strong accusations against the government. “The Home Minister is scared; he authorised the shooting of our students,” Gandhi declared to the gathered media. He continued, “He put pellets into the blood of our students; he ordered the students of India to be shot.” The student protesters had been marching toward Parliament to voice their concerns about the NEET examination paper leak when police deployed pellet guns, lathis, and tear gas to disperse them.
Parliamentary Row and Speaker’s Intervention
Gandhi’s bold statements immediately sparked controversy within the House of the People. NDA MPs demanded concrete proof for his allegations, while Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla stepped in to remind members that unsubstantiated claims should not be made during parliamentary proceedings. The Opposition leader expressed frustration over the proceedings, noting that he had been repeatedly prevented from speaking while other ministers were given the floor.
“I was not allowed to speak. Multiple times Rajnath Singh and Kiren Rijiju were allowed to speak. I was given an assurance that if I apologised, I would be allowed to continue. I will never ever apologise to the BJP or the RSS,” Gandhi stated firmly during his press conference.
Urging Prime Minister Narendra Modi to take decisive action, Gandhi reiterated his call to Sack Amit Shah from his position as Home Minister. He proposed that a Supreme Court-monitored investigation should be initiated to thoroughly examine allegations of police brutality against the student protesters on July 20. The Opposition leader pointed to an image of the Home Minister displayed on a screen behind him, telling the assembled students: “This is the man who beat you, thrashed you, humiliated you and shot you with pellet guns.”
Gandhi presented a logical argument regarding the Home Minister’s responsibility. He explained that if Shah had indeed ordered the police crackdown, then he was “culpable” and deserved removal. Conversely, if the Home Minister was unaware of the orders, then he was “incompetent” and equally unfit for his position. The Opposition leader assured the public that victims of pellet gun firing, lathi charges, and tear gassing during the CJP-led protests would eventually receive justice, because either way, the Home Minister would “have to go.”
The incident has reignited national discourse on student rights and police conduct during peaceful demonstrations. With the opposition demanding accountability and the government defending its actions, the situation remains tense.
