According to party spokesperson Saurav Das, the court’s permission for state governments to continue maintaining First Information Reports (FIRs) against protesters directly contradicts assurances previously given by the central government.
The timeline of events began on July 25, when the Centre made a public pledge to withdraw all FIRs lodged against demonstrators participating in the Cockroach Janta Party’s protests. The government promised to ensure that no individual would face either direct or indirect consequences for their involvement in the demonstrations. In good faith, the CJP suspended its countrywide agitation, placing its trust in these commitments. He noted that officials did not contest the interim order even though they were fully informed about the discussions and assurances provided to the CJP. A government that breaks its word cannot expect the youth to remain silent. If the guarantees are dishonoured, the streets of India will once again become the voice of its young,” he said.
