Enforcement Directorate Investigation Underway

The Trinamool Congress legislator has received official summons for an inquiry related to municipality recruitment irregularities. The hearing will take place at the ED’s Salt Lake office, situated within the CGO complex in Kolkata. This important date comes shortly after Mitra delivered public remarks during the Martyr’s Day observance ceremony on Mayo Road on July 21.
The Kamarhati representative has been under scrutiny as part of broader investigations into electoral and administrative matters. Earlier in June, enforcement officials conducted comprehensive searches at multiple properties owned by Mitra. These operations yielded numerous documents that are now being examined as part of the ongoing case. The spouse of the TMC MLA has also been summoned to appear before the ED on July 23, indicating the scope of the investigation extends beyond the legislator himself.
A trusted associate of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, Mitra has recently aligned himself with the breakaway political group headed by Ritabrata Banerjee. Following receipt of the official notice, he expressed his willingness to work with authorities, stating:

Defamation Notice and Political Realignment
TMC MLA Madan Mitra faces additional legal pressure through a defamation notice issued by Abhishek Banerjee’s legal team. On July 14, Mitra received his initial ED notice and subsequently visited the residence of rebel TMC MLA Sandipan Saha. He formally joined the dissident camp within the West Bengal Assembly the very next day. Throughout this period, Mitra has maintained a critical stance toward Abhishek Banerjee while continuing to acknowledge Mamata Banerjee as his primary political leader.
The defamation proceedings stem from statements Mitra made during a Facebook Live broadcast on July 19. Legal representatives acting for Abhishek Banerjee issued a formal notice demanding Rs 10 crore in compensation. The claim alleges that Mitra’s remarks damaged Abhishek’s personal standing and reputation. The notice specifies that the demanded amount should be deposited into a registered trust designed to support defection proceedings involving AITC members who have left the party.
It is made clear that the said Rs 10 crore shall be put into a registered trust, which shall facilitate the defection proceedings against defected MPs and MLAs of AITC and shall also cater to the legal and rehabilitation requirements of the victims of political violence inflicted upon them by false criminal cases instituted at the instance of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), hand in glove with a few unattached defected Members of Lok Sabha and of West Bengal Legislative Assembly.
Shrobana Sengupta, counsel for Abhishek Banerjee, has stipulated that Mitra must settle the amount within three days and provide a public apology through both written and video mediums. This deadline adds urgency to the situation as Mitra navigates multiple legal proceedings simultaneously.
During the July 21 Martyr’s Day rally, Mitra had publicly challenged Abhishek Banerjee’s authority on the stage. He urged Mamata to join their faction while declaring:
It is your party; it is not Abhishek’s party.
