Why Nitin Gadkari is suing Meta, X and Google: Legal Battle Over Deepfake Content

Indiadailyupdate.com – Why Nitin Gadkari is suing major technology platforms has become a significant legal development in India. The Bombay High Court has granted permission to Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari to file a civil lawsuit concerning alleged defamatory content circulating against him online. This legal action comes under a specific clause that applies when the cause of action falls outside the territorial jurisdiction of the High Court. The court’s permission is essential to enable proper consideration of the petition.

Understanding the Lawsuit Against Tech Giants

The permission granted by the court will allow Gadkari to proceed with a comprehensive lawsuit against Meta Platforms, X, and Google. The legal action targets posts containing allegedly defamatory AI-generated deepfake videos and manipulated digital content. These materials are directly linked to the ethanol blending controversy that has sparked widespread public debate. The suit specifically seeks the removal of “defamatory” content that Gadkari claims incorrectly associates him with the ethanol blended petrol and the E20 initiative.

Gadkari has firmly stated that the E20 initiative was administered exclusively by the Union Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas. He emphasized that he had no direct role in these programmes despite being associated with transport matters. The court will now hear his application for interim relief, which includes a request for a temporary injunction to prevent further dissemination of the problematic content.

“The purpose of this civil suit is not to prevent public criticism of my actions or government policies,” Gadkari clarified in his legal filing.

In his suit, Gadkari explained that the defamatory and deepfake content published by the defendant platforms is “false, fabricated and defamatory with respect to the plaintiff.” He further stated that the deepfake videos utilized his personality and publicity rights without obtaining his consent. This legal argument strengthens his position that his image and reputation have been exploited for misleading purposes.

He alleged that unknown persons circulated posts and deepfake content that falsely portrayed him as a key personality responsible for the EBP and E20 initiatives. Additionally, he claimed that these materials suggested he and his family financially benefited from these programmes. Earlier in July, Gadkari had publicly stated that the sugar and ethanol businesses operated by his sons have only a small presence in the sector. He maintained that he had no involvement in the operations and pricing decisions related to these businesses.

The legal development arrives amid increasing protests against the centre’s decision to push the use of E20 petrol across the country. Vehicle owners have raised serious concerns that the use of ethanol-blended petrol results in reduced mileage and potential engine damage. These complaints have gained momentum, with the Delhi Tourist Transporters Association planning to march to Parliament on August 4 to protest the new policy.

As the case moves forward, it highlights the growing intersection of digital media, artificial intelligence, and legal accountability. The outcome could set important precedents for how public figures can protect their reputation against AI-generated misinformation on social media platforms.
