Rescue Effort Continues as Nepal Flood Death Toll Reaches 1,385

Indiadailyupdate.com – Nepal’s disaster response teams are continuing an extensive search across flood-hit districts after the number of confirmed deaths from devastating flash floods rose to 1,385 on Friday. More than 5,000 people are still unaccounted for as security personnel work through areas heavily damaged by the disaster.

The floods began after an ice-rock avalanche near the Nepal-Tibet border on August 26. Powerful floodwaters then moved through northern and central parts of Nepal, causing widespread destruction in communities along their path. Homes, roads, bridges, vehicles and hydropower facilities were among the infrastructure swept away or severely damaged.

Districts record heavy losses

Chitwan has recorded the highest number of bodies recovered so far, with 364 deaths. Nawalparasi East has recovered 228 bodies, while Nawalparasi West has recorded 222.

Other badly affected districts include Nuwakot, where 199 bodies have been found, and Rasuwa, with 185 recoveries. Gorkha has recorded 77 bodies, Dhading 70 and Tanahu 38. The figures underline the broad geographical impact of the flooding and the difficult scale of the continuing recovery operation.

A joint security command remains deployed for search and rescue work. The estimated number of missing people stands at 5,130, leaving many families waiting for information as responders examine damaged settlements and river corridors.

Floodwaters followed the Bhotekoshi River

The Bhotekoshi River carried the surge southward from the Himalayan border area. As the waters moved downstream, they tore through roads and bridges that connect communities, while also damaging residences, vehicles and major infrastructure projects.

Flood emergencies of this scale can complicate rescue operations because access routes themselves may be destroyed. Damaged bridges and roads can isolate towns, while unstable riverbanks and debris-filled channels may make it harder for teams to reach areas where people could be trapped or stranded.

The impact on hydropower projects is also significant for communities that depend on such infrastructure. Repairing damaged facilities, transport routes and homes can require a long recovery period after immediate rescue operations have ended.

Nepalis return home from China

In Sindhupalchok, 703 Nepali nationals who had been stranded in China after the flooding have returned through the Tatopani border point. They had been working in China before the disaster disrupted travel and caused major losses in Keyrung and Rasuwa districts.

The returnees travelled through Keyrung and crossed into Nepal at Tatopani. Of the people who returned, 205 were women and 498 were men. Their arrival reflects the cross-border disruption created by the disaster, which affected communities on both sides of the Himalayan frontier.

Border crossings can become especially important during a major emergency, providing a route for people whose normal movement has been interrupted by damaged roads, flooding or other hazards. The safe return of stranded workers is an important part of the wider humanitarian response, alongside the search for missing residents and assistance for displaced families.

Impact extends into Tibet

The disaster has also caused fatalities on the Chinese side of the border. At least 43 people were killed there, while more than 500 people remain missing in Tibet.

The losses in Nepal and across the border show how events in high Himalayan regions can quickly affect multiple communities downstream. An avalanche-triggered flood can send water, rock and debris through valleys with enormous force, endangering settlements and vital transport links far from the original site.

For Nepal, the immediate priority remains locating missing people and helping communities cut off by the floods. As recovery progresses, authorities will face the additional challenge of restoring roads, bridges, homes and damaged public infrastructure in areas where the disaster has reshaped riverbanks and destroyed familiar routes.

With thousands still missing, the human cost of the flooding is likely to remain the central concern for affected families and rescue teams in the days ahead.
