Mumbai Braces for Intense Rainfall Through Monday
Indiadailyupdate.com – The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued forecasts indicating Mumbai will face extreme rainfall conditions for the next several days, with the heaviest downpours anticipated to persist until Monday. Alongside the rain, strong winds and disruptions to daily activities are expected across the city and its neighboring regions.
Regional Impact and Weather Patterns
Heavy to very heavy rain is projected in multiple areas, including isolated spots in Mumbai’s suburbs where extremely heavy precipitation may occur. Wind speeds of 50-60 kmph are also forecasted. Beyond Mumbai, districts like Raigad, Thane, Palghar, Ratnagiri, and Sindhudurg are set to experience significant rainfall over the next two days. The weather office highlighted that rainfall intensity will peak after midnight on Saturday, following a surge starting late Saturday evening.
“We have requested people to avoid travel if possible so that accidents caused by heavy rain and storms can be prevented. Citizens should follow official alerts and venture out only in accordance with the advisories,” stated Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis.
Fadnavis urged residents and tourists in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) and Pune-Nashik corridor to limit non-essential travel and heed weather advisories. The Regional Meteorological Centre’s warnings about thunderstorms and heavy rain have prompted the state government to issue frequent alerts via SMS and other communication methods.
Emergency Measures and Local Conditions
State Disaster Management Minister Girish Mahajan confirmed that rescue and emergency teams are deployed in flood-prone areas to address potential crises. He noted that Mumbai had received over 200 mm of rain in a 12-hour span, calling it an unusually severe event. Mahajan also emphasized the importance of avoiding coastal zones during high tide, citing past accidents linked to visitors ignoring safety warnings.
Meanwhile, civic teams are actively clearing waterlogged streets, while personnel from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) are stationed at critical points. In Palghar’s Mandovi region, 19 individuals were extracted from floodwaters by emergency crews on Saturday. The same day, Thane and Palghar experienced heavy rain, with Thane logging 65.79 mm between 8:30 am and 1:30 pm, and Palghar recording 97.70 mm, contributing to seasonal totals of 829.84 mm and 643.10 mm respectively.
Mumbai Mayor Ritu Tawde reiterated the need for caution, citing instances where people continued walking on the Worli seafront despite warnings from the BMC and police. She called for immediate evacuation of the area as water levels rose and the risk of incidents increased.
